Numerous residents and business owners in Kazakhstan are reporting a widespread issue: their bank accounts have been unexpectedly frozen. The complaints, which have flooded social media platforms like Threads, indicate the problem is affecting customers across multiple financial institutions.

Many of those affected state they have no outstanding tax debts or fines, leaving them confused about the reasons behind the account seizures. Screenshots shared online show notifications citing failures to comply with "notifications on elimination of violations" from tax audits, yet users claim thorough checks reveal no legitimate cause for the block.

The situation has caused significant personal inconvenience. One individual described being left without access to funds, forced to ask strangers for money to pay a parking fee. Others express frustration over being unable to reach bank call centers for explanations.

In some cases, customers have been told the freeze is due to a "technical error" and to await an automatic unblocking, with no clear timeline provided. The scale of the reports suggests a systemic issue rather than isolated incidents.

The Committee of State Revenues has been approached for comment on the mass account seizures. Officials stated they are awaiting information from the relevant department and are monitoring the situation.

This incident follows recent warnings from tax authorities about potential account blocks related to scrutiny of mobile money transfers. According to established procedures, individuals who meet certain criteria, receive a notification, but fail to visit the tax office within a month risk having their accounts frozen on the 41st day.

Financial institutions are required to submit data on citizens' mobile transfers for the first quarter of 2026 to tax authorities by April 15th. The revenue committee has previously outlined how this control mechanism will function and who might be subject to such checks.
