Kazakhstan Ranks Among Top Five Nations for Teacher Salary Satisfaction

The results of the international TALIS-2024 study were presented at an expanded meeting of the board of the Ministry of Education of Kazakhstan. The data reveals a significant positive shift, placing Kazakhstan among the top five countries globally in terms of teacher satisfaction with their salaries.

This key indicator has shown remarkable growth, rising from just 39% in 2018 to 71% in the current survey. Furthermore, an overwhelming 95% of educators in the country now report being satisfied with their jobs overall, indicating a high level of professional contentment.

The positive trends are attributed to systemic reforms within the education sector. The adoption of the "On the Status of a Teacher" law has addressed several long-standing issues. Notably, teachers' weekly workload has been reduced from 50 to 36 hours, and annual leave has been extended to 56 days.

Financial improvements have been substantial. Over recent years, salaries for school teachers have doubled, while wages for kindergarten educators have increased by 30%. These measures have helped reduce administrative burdens and created conditions allowing teachers to focus more on student instruction and their own professional growth.

The impact on teacher qualifications is also evident. The proportion of educators holding a master's degree has tripled and now stands at 11%.

Kazakhstani teachers are also gaining international recognition. A notable example is Almaty chemistry teacher Tatiana Belousova being named among the top 50 educators worldwide in the Global Teacher Prize competition. Additionally, five teachers have been awarded the title "Kazakhstan's Labor Hero," and 95 educators have received the honorific "Honored Teacher of Kazakhstan."

Looking ahead, the ministry plans to continue supporting young specialists, developing digital literacy, and implementing advanced standards for personnel training. Priorities include further improving legislative protections for teachers' rights and relieving them of non-core functions. The comprehensive measures aim to strengthen the nation's intellectual potential and reduce educational inequality, particularly in rural regions.
