Kazakhstan and WADA Sign Cooperation Memorandum to Combat Doping
Kazakhstan has formalized its partnership with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) by signing a memorandum of cooperation. The document was inked on March 22 during a meeting between Kazakhstan's Minister of Culture and Sports, Yerbol Myrzabosynov, and WADA President Witold Bańka on the sidelines of the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland.
The agreement underscores Kazakhstan's commitment to the principles of clean sport and is part of implementing the state's directives on developing international cooperation and anti-doping policy. It also confirms the country's leading role in promoting fair play across Central Asia.
"The warm reception by the Head of State during our visit to Astana last year was an important milestone in developing cooperation between WADA and Kazakhstan," said Witold Bańka. "I would like to express gratitude to your country, represented by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, for its support and significant contribution to scientific progress in anti-doping research. This agreement demonstrates that Kazakhstan is increasingly playing a leading role in advancing clean sport in the region."
The parties also discussed the possibility of holding meetings of WADA's Executive Committee and Foundation Board in Astana in 2027.
Minister Yerbol Myrzabosynov emphasized that Kazakhstan consistently adheres to principles of fair competition and is actively developing its anti-doping education system. "Cooperation with WADA is of strategic importance for us," he stated. "In Kazakhstan, priority is given to developing a culture of honest sport, strengthening international standards, and implementing best global practices. Kazakhstan not only supports but actively implements programs for doping prevention and education."
The development of specialized educational and scientific infrastructure holds particular significance within this partnership. The Kazakh National University of Sports is being considered as a platform for training specialists and exchanging knowledge, which would strengthen Kazakhstan's role as an educational hub for leadership in anti-doping policy in Central Asia.
This year's memorandum builds upon systematic cooperation development. Last year, President Tokayev received WADA President Witold Bańka—the first such visit by an agency president to Kazakhstan—and awarded him the Order "Dostyk" (Friendship) II degree.
