During an official visit to the United Kingdom, Kazakhstan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yermek Kosherbayev, held talks with his British counterpart, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper. The meeting focused on deepening the strategic partnership between the two nations across several key sectors.
The ministers reviewed the current state and future potential of bilateral relations. Discussions centered on enhancing cooperation in trade and investment, critical minerals, transport and logistics, finance, digitalization, education, and climate policy.
Minister Kosherbayev highlighted the significance of the Strategic Partnership and Cooperation Agreement signed in 2024. He noted that its ratification would create new opportunities for collaboration across a wide range of areas. "This year marks 34 years of diplomatic relations between our countries," said Kosherbayev. "Over this period, Astana and London have established an active political dialogue, expanded trade and investment ties, and strengthened people-to-people contacts. The UK remains one of Kazakhstan's key partners in Europe."
A substantial part of the talks was dedicated to cooperation on critical minerals. The officials emphasized that a newly signed Roadmap for 2026-2027 gives their collaboration a practical focus. This framework is expected to unlock joint projects in geological exploration, mineral processing, and the adoption of modern technologies.
The development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route was another major topic. Both sides recognized its role as a vital corridor for enhancing Eurasian connectivity and ensuring the resilience of global supply chains.
In education and science, mutual interest was confirmed in further expanding academic links. The recent establishment of branches from leading UK universities—including De Montfort University, Heriot-Watt University, Coventry University, and Cardiff University—in Kazakhstan was cited as evidence of a shift towards deeper institutional cooperation.
In conclusion, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership moving forward.
