On April 15, 2026, in Astana, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Yermek Kosherbayev held talks with the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Water, Retno Marsudi.

During the meeting, Kosherbayev highlighted the importance of the Special Envoy's mandate in light of escalating global challenges to water security. He stated that undermining this security could act as a catalyst for economic, environmental, and social crises.

The Foreign Minister emphasized the significance of Marsudi's visit ahead of the Regional Environmental Summit scheduled to take place in Astana. He noted that water security issues would receive special attention during this high-level event.

In this context, Kosherbayev presented an initiative by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to establish an International Water Organization under the auspices of the United Nations. The Kazakh side believes this proposal is gaining particular relevance against a backdrop of growing threats to global peace and security linked to potential conflicts over access to water resources.

Following their discussions, both parties agreed to continue constructive dialogue on global and regional water-related issues. This cooperation will also be facilitated through the UN Regional Centre for Sustainable Development located in Almaty.
