On April 9, 2026, in Yerevan, the Foreign Ministers of Kazakhstan and Armenia held comprehensive talks to strengthen bilateral ties. Kazakh Foreign Minister Yermek Kosherbayev met with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan to discuss expanding multifaceted cooperation between the two nations.
The ministers conducted a thorough review of the current state and future prospects of their mutually beneficial partnership. A significant portion of the dialogue focused on enhancing trade, economic relations, and unlocking the full potential of transit and transport corridors. Both sides emphasized the crucial role played by existing bilateral mechanisms like the Intergovernmental Commission and the Kazakh-Armenian Business Council.
"A key objective for us is to facilitate both qualitative and quantitative growth in our mutual trade turnover," stated Minister Kosherbayev. "This can be achieved by diversifying trade flows and creating opportunities for promoting new types of goods in each other's markets."
The officials noted a solid foundation for deepening commercial links, citing over 100 enterprises with Kazakh capital registered in Armenia and more than 400 Armenian companies operating in Kazakhstan.
Minister Kosherbayev briefed his colleague on Kazakhstan's diverse package of investment incentives. He expressed confidence that combining the two countries' economic potentials would significantly boost investment cooperation.
Collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI) and digitalization was identified as a particularly promising area. In this context, they highlighted the successful project to establish a branch of the Armenian educational center "TUMO Astana" in Kazakhstan. The Kazakh Foreign Minister also voiced interest in implementing joint initiatives aimed at developing an innovation ecosystem and promoting domestic technological solutions.
The talks explored several new avenues for partnership, including atomic energy, pharmaceuticals, higher education, and healthcare.
Minister Kosherbayev drew attention to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's initiative to establish an International Water Organization under the UN framework. This initiative aims to foster global cooperation for effective water resource management.
Regional transport connectivity was another key topic. The ministers underscored that enhanced transit-logistics links create new opportunities for integrating Central Asian and South Caucasus markets. They welcomed positive developments regarding the resumption of direct flights between cities in Kazakhstan and Armenia.
The diplomats also aligned their positions on pressing regional and international issues, with special focus on strengthening peace and stability in Central Asia and the South Caucasus. Constructive interaction within various international organizations was acknowledged as well.
