Israel and Lebanon Hold First Direct Talks in Decades Amid Border Tensions
@TengriNews
For the first time in over thirty years, Israel and Lebanon have engaged in direct negotiations. The historic talks, held at the U.S. State Department in Washington, were facilitated by American officials.
The dialogue commenced against a backdrop of ongoing military activity along the southern Lebanese border. Despite the diplomatic opening, Israel continues its offensive operations in the region, which it states are targeted against Hezbollah militants.
Lebanon was represented by its Ambassador to the United States, Nada Haddad, while Israel's delegation was led by Ambassador Yehiel Leiter. The U.S. Mediating team included Secretary of State Marco Rubio—who also serves as a national security advisor to President Donald Trump—U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Michelle Issa, advisor Michael Needham, and special envoy to the UN Mike Waltz.
Following brief remarks for photographers, the officials moved behind closed doors to begin their discussions. Secretary Rubio sought to temper expectations for an immediate breakthrough, framing the meeting as the start of a "process" rather than a culminating event.
"All of the complexities of this issue will not be resolved in the next six hours," Rubio stated. "But we can begin moving forward to create conditions where something can happen—something very positive, something very sustainable."
When asked about his expectations for the talks, Israeli envoy Yehiel Leiter offered a succinct reply: "Only good."
The negotiations follow a significant escalation earlier this month. After a cross-border attack by Hezbollah on March 2nd, the Israeli military expanded its aerial and ground offensive operations into Lebanese territory. This escalation persists despite a ceasefire agreement that took effect in November 2024.
The human cost of the recent hostilities has been severe. According to Lebanese health authorities, the Israeli offensive has resulted in at least 2,089 fatalities and left 6,762 people wounded.
