Iranian Warships Deploy Long-Range Air Defense Missiles in Strait of Hormuz Drill

Recent imagery from a major naval exercise conducted by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy reveals a significant advancement in the country's maritime defense capabilities. The "Smart Control" drill, held last week in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, featured the successful launch of a long-range air defense missile from a warship, marking a shift beyond point-defense systems.
The missile, identified as the Sayyad 3-G, was fired vertically from the Shahid Sayyad Shirazi warship. This vessel is the third in the Soleimani class and is equipped with six large vertical launch silos for these advanced munitions. The naval Sayyad 3-G is a variant of the land-based Sayyad 3-F system.
With an engagement range reported at 150 kilometers, this weapon system provides Iranian naval forces with an extensive area defense capability. It is designed to counter high-altitude threats including fighter aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles, effectively creating an air defense umbrella over regional waters.
The vertical launch capability offers immediate 360-degree coverage without requiring the ship to maneuver its launchers toward a target. This allows for rapid engagement and enhances the vessel's ability to defend against coordinated or saturation attacks. Military analysts observe that this development effectively transforms IRGC Navy warships into mobile air defense platforms, bolstering security for Iran's southern maritime approaches.
