Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas has departed from Tehran, leading a diplomatic delegation to Geneva for a new round of nuclear negotiations with the United States. The American side is represented by negotiators headed by Steve Wikoff.
This meeting will be the third direct engagement between the two nations since discussions commenced in early February. The initial round took place in Muscat, Oman, on February 6, followed by a second session in Geneva on February 17.
The talks are being conducted indirectly, with mediation provided by Oman’s Foreign Minister Hamad Al Busaidi.
In a statement on social media platform X on Tuesday night, Abbas expressed Iran's position. He stated that building upon the understandings reached in the prior round, Iran is resuming talks with determination to secure a fair and equitable agreement as swiftly as possible.
He emphasized that there exists a historic opportunity to forge an unprecedented deal that addresses the concerns and serves the interests of both parties. While affirming that an agreement is attainable, he stressed that this outcome depends on prioritizing diplomatic efforts.
In a recent interview with CBS News on February 22, Abbas noted that Iran is actively working on the components of a potential deal. He expressed hope that upon arrival in Geneva, both sides would be prepared to negotiate based on prepared drafts.
