Iran's permanent mission to the United Nations has issued a statement explaining its decision to vote against a recent UN General Assembly draft resolution on the war in Ukraine.

The Iranian representative reiterated Tehran's longstanding position, emphasizing a principled commitment to resolving international disputes peacefully through dialogue and in strict adherence to international law, including the UN Charter.

The diplomat underscored the necessity for all UN member states to fully respect sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and internationally recognized borders. The statement also called for refraining from the threat or use of force.

While expressing support for a durable peace in Ukraine, Iran's envoy argued that any lasting solution must confront the fundamental origins of the conflict. The statement pointed to what it described as provocative actions and decisions by certain states and NATO as key underlying factors.

The Iranian mission expressed regret that the draft resolution failed to acknowledge these root causes. It criticized the timing of the text's introduction as inappropriate and lamented a lack of transparent prior consultations. The diplomat warned that such resolutions risk deepening international divisions and being exploited for geopolitical competition rather than fostering genuine peace.

The representative also categorically rejected allegations that Iran has provided support to any party involved in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The resolution, titled "Support for Lasting Peace in Ukraine," was co-sponsored by Ukraine and at least 47 other nations, many from Europe. It was adopted with 107 votes in favor, 12 against, and 51 abstentions. Notable opponents included Russia and Belarus. Major powers like China and the United States were among those who abstained. A significant number of abstentions came from countries in the Global South, including several Persian Gulf states.

This vote marks at least the sixth UN General Assembly resolution on the conflict since its inception over four years ago. While early resolutions in 2022 and 2023 garnered over 140 votes in favor, support has gradually declined in subsequent years. A similar resolution last year received 93 yes votes, indicating a slight increase in backing for Ukraine with this latest tally of 107.
