Iran Launches Missiles at US-UK Base Diego Garcia in Indian Ocean

Iran has fired two medium-range ballistic missiles at the joint US-UK military base on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, according to reports. The incident, which occurred recently, marks a significant escalation in Tehran's military posture.

Neither of the launched missiles struck their intended target. One reportedly malfunctioned during its flight, while the other was intercepted by a US Navy ship using an SM-3 missile. It remains unconfirmed whether the interception was successful.

This event represents Iran's first known combat use of medium-range ballistic missiles and its first major attempt to threaten US interests outside the Middle East region. The Diego Garcia base is located approximately 4,000 kilometers from Iran, suggesting Tehran may possess missiles with greater range than it has previously acknowledged.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had earlier stated that Tehran intentionally limited its missile range to 2,000 kilometers to avoid being perceived as a global threat. The recent strike contradicts that declared limitation.

The missile launch follows ongoing hostilities. Since late February, the United States and Israel have conducted airstrikes against targets in Iran. These strikes have reportedly resulted in significant casualties, including high-ranking officials and security personnel.

In response to these actions, Iran has been attacking neighboring states in the Persian Gulf region using missiles and drones. Tehran claims these strikes target American military facilities in the area, though attacks have also hit oil storage depots and tankers.

Amidst these tensions, US President Donald Trump recently suggested on social media that American military objectives against Iran were nearly complete and that Washington was considering scaling back large-scale operations in the Middle East.
