Elon Musk has announced the launch of the Terafab project, a new initiative aimed at creating the world's largest microchip manufacturing facility. The ambitious goal is to achieve an annual production capacity of one trillion watts of computational power.

The project will be a collaborative effort involving Musk's companies Tesla, xAI, and SpaceX. In a statement, Musk emphasized that a significant portion of this immense computing infrastructure will necessarily be deployed in space. This move is driven by the scale of the energy required; the total electricity generation capacity of the United States is approximately 0.5 terawatts.

Details shared by Tesla outline plans for a unified manufacturing hub that will produce logic chips, memory semiconductors, and advanced packaging technologies under one roof. The annual target of up to 1 terawatt represents a computational output that would surpass the combined current and projected 2030 capacity of all global chipmakers.

The driving vision behind Terafab is to support future large-scale programs for harvesting solar energy in space. According to Tesla's announcement, fully utilizing the sun's energy would require launching up to 100 million tons of solar collection systems into orbit annually.

This monumental endeavor would necessitate the capability to launch millions of tons of cargo, deploy AI-powered solar satellites, and utilize millions of Tesla Optimus robots for construction in space. The chip demand for such an operation is staggering: Optimus robots alone would require 100–200 gigawatts of compute power, while the solar AI satellites would need terawatts.

"We are creating TERAFAB to close the gap between current chip manufacturing capabilities and future demand—a future among the stars," Tesla stated. Previously reported estimates valued the project at around $25 billion, with a planned production volume of 100 to 200 billion specialized AI and memory chips per year.
