On April 9, 2026, in Yerevan, the Foreign Ministers of Kazakhstan and Armenia held talks to chart a course for deeper bilateral cooperation. Kazakh Foreign Minister Yermek Kosherbayev met with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan to discuss strengthening multifaceted ties between the two nations.
The ministers placed significant emphasis on expanding trade and economic links. Kosherbayev highlighted the goal of achieving both qualitative and quantitative growth in mutual trade turnover. "Diversifying trade and creating opportunities to promote new types of goods in each other's markets can contribute to this," he stated.
A solid foundation for this expansion already exists, with over 100 enterprises involving Kazakh capital registered in Armenia and more than 400 Armenian companies operating in Kazakhstan. Kosherbayev briefed his colleague on the diverse package of preferences available to investors in Kazakhstan, expressing confidence that combining the two countries' potentials would significantly boost investment cooperation.
Promising new areas for partnership were identified during the talks. Cooperation in artificial intelligence and digitalization was highlighted as mutually beneficial, with the successful establishment of a branch of the Armenian educational center "TUMO Astana" in Kazakhstan cited as an example. The Kazakh side also expressed interest in joint initiatives to develop an innovation ecosystem and promote domestic technological solutions.
Other prospective fields for collaboration include atomic energy, pharmaceuticals, higher education, and healthcare.
The discussions also covered regional transport connectivity. Both sides underscored that enhanced transit-logistics links create new opportunities for integrating the markets of Central Asia and the South Caucasus. They noted with satisfaction the positive dynamics in resuming direct flights between cities in Kazakhstan and Armenia.
Kosherbayev drew attention to Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's initiative to establish a UN-based International Water Organization aimed at fostering global cooperation for effective water resource management.
The diplomats also aligned their positions on pressing regional and international issues, focusing particularly on strengthening peace and stability in Central Asia and the South Caucasus. They noted their constructive interaction within various international organizations.
