UN Chief Calls for Ceasefire and Dialogue in Middle East Conflict

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a statement addressing the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, characterizing recent talks between the US and Iran as a "positive and significant" step towards resuming dialogue, despite no formal agreement being reached.
"Given the deeply rooted differences, an agreement cannot be reached overnight, and the Secretary-General calls for a constructive continuation of negotiations," stated his spokesperson.
Guterres emphasized that there is no military solution to the current crisis and called for all parties to respect an existing ceasefire. He urged constructive negotiations to continue.
The UN chief expressed gratitude to Pakistan for hosting the talks and to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey for their mediation efforts. He called on the international community to support these diplomatic initiatives.
A critical point in his statement was a call for all sides to respect freedom of navigation, including in the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with international law. The UN highlighted that approximately 20,000 seafarers remain trapped on ships stranded in the strait due to the conflict.
The organization warned that disruptions to maritime trade are having a direct economic impact far beyond the region, destabilizing multiple sectors. Guterres specifically pointed out that disruptions in fertilizer and raw material supplies are exacerbating food insecurity for millions of vulnerable people worldwide and contributing to rising living costs.
In a related social media post on X (formerly Twitter), Guterres reiterated his message: "After weeks of destruction & distress, it is clear that there is no military solution... I call for resumption of talks... The ceasefire must absolutely be preserved. All violations must cease."
