A French soldier serving with the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon was killed on Saturday, according to an announcement by French President Emmanuel Macron. The president directly blamed the Shiite militant group Hezbollah for the attack.

Master Sergeant Florian Montorio of the 17th Parachute Engineer Regiment from Montauban died in southern Lebanon during an assault on UN peacekeepers. Three of his comrades were wounded in the incident and subsequently evacuated.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, President Macron expressed the nation's deep respect and support for the families of its soldiers and all military personnel working for peace in Lebanon. "All indications are that responsibility for this attack lies with Hezbollah," he stated. France has demanded that Lebanese authorities immediately arrest and bring those responsible to justice.

The killing threatens to escalate tensions in southern Lebanon. This comes just hours after Lebanese President Joseph Aoun suggested the country was on the verge of a "new phase" of "permanent agreements," following a 10-day ceasefire taking effect in the war between Israel and Hezbollah.

Lebanon was drawn into the broader Middle East conflict on March 2 when Hezbollah, which is backed by Tehran, launched attacks against Israel. The group stated this was retaliation for the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Israel responded with multiple strikes on Lebanese territory and initiated a ground offensive. The hostilities have resulted in nearly 2,300 deaths and displaced over one million people from their homes.

The prospect of negotiations with Israel remains deeply divisive within Lebanon. While some see talks as a potential path to end decades of recurring conflict, others, including Hezbollah and its supporters, firmly reject them.
