France Deploys Naval Task Force to Secure Strait of Hormuz Shipping

France is assembling a significant naval force to protect commercial shipping in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. President Emmanuel Macron announced the deployment, framing it as a defensive mission aimed at restoring the critical flow of oil and gas from the region.
The operation will center around France's flagship vessel and involve eight frigates and two amphibious helicopter carriers. Their area of responsibility will span the eastern Mediterranean, the Red Sea, and the Strait of Hormuz itself.
Speaking in Paphos, Cyprus—an EU member state recently targeted by Iranian drones—Macron described the planned joint mission with allies as "purely defensive and purely supportive." Its objective is to escort container ships and tankers to gradually reopen maritime traffic through the strait once the most acute phase of current hostilities subsides.
"This is extremely important for international trade, as well as for the flow of gas and oil, which must once again be able to leave this region," Macron emphasized. He also issued a stark warning, stating that an attack on Cyprus constitutes an attack on all of Europe.
Maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely disrupted since February 28. The narrow waterway is a crucial chokepoint for global energy supplies, with about one-fifth of the world's oil shipments passing through it. The situation escalated on March 7 when Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed drone attacks on tankers in both the strait and the Persian Gulf.
