FIFA has officially ended all uncertainty regarding Iran's participation in the upcoming 2026 World Cup, confirming that the team's matches will proceed in the United States as originally planned. The global football governing body has rejected a proposal to relocate Iran's fixtures to Mexico.

The decision was announced by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum during a press conference at the National Palace. She explained that altering host venues at this stage would demand significant logistical reorganization, which is not viable with just two months remaining until the tournament kicks off.

The speculation about a potential move arose after Iran's ambassador to Mexico, Abolfazl Pasandideh, publicly criticized U.S. Authorities for what he claimed was insufficient cooperation in issuing visas and arranging logistical support for the Iranian delegation. This criticism fueled discussions about shifting Iran's games to Mexican soil, against a backdrop of ongoing diplomatic tensions.

The Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran had reportedly been engaged in talks with FIFA since mid-March to discuss possible alternative arrangements, pointing to potential security and organizational challenges.

Statements from the United States presented a mixed picture. U.S. President Donald Trump first stated that Iran's national team would be welcomed as participants in the tournament co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. However, he later expressed reservations about player safety, suggesting their presence might be problematic under current conditions.

In its final ruling, FIFA prioritized maintaining the tournament's stability and avoiding disruptive last-minute changes, thereby ensuring the competition proceeds according to its established schedule.

Iran has been placed in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. Team Melli is scheduled to play New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles and will meet Egypt in Seattle. For the duration of their campaign, the Iranian squad will be based in Arizona.
