Kazakhstani athlete Yerbol Khamitov has achieved a historic double at the XIV Winter Paralympic Games, held from March 6 to 15, 2026, in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.
In the para biathlon pursuit event over a distance of 4.5 kilometers, Khamitov delivered a brilliant performance to secure the gold medal. This victory marks a significant milestone for Kazakhstan's national team and stands as one of the brightest moments in the history of the country's Paralympic movement.
Adding to his success, Khamitov also demonstrated exceptional skill in the para cross-country skiing finals, where he earned a bronze medal. Facing strong competition, the athlete maintained a high pace throughout the race and showed remarkable determination right up to the finish line.
These outstanding results are the culmination of years of dedicated preparation, systematic state support, expert work from his coaching staff, and cohesive teamwork by the entire squad. In preparation for these Games, starting in early 2025, the national team completed seven training camps—two held domestically in Kazakhstan and five abroad.
To enhance training effectiveness, consultant coach Roman Petushkov was brought on contract specifically for para cross-country skiing and para biathlon. Furthermore, the team was fully equipped with all necessary sports gear, including rifles for para biathlon as well as specialized training and racing equipment.
Yerbol Khamitov's historic triumph continues a legacy of successful performances by Kazakh athletes on the world stage. He has admirably carried forward the winning momentum established by figure skater Mikhail Shaidorov at the Olympic Games onto the Paralympic platform.
