Russian Court Arrests Four in Major Kazakh Bank Heist Investigation
@TengriNews
A court in Ivanovo, Russia, has placed four Russian citizens under house arrest in connection with a high-profile bank robbery in Kazakhstan. The suspects are accused of stealing jewelry and cash from a vault at a branch of Halyk Bank (People's Bank of Kazakhstan) in Pavlodar.
The criminal case, initiated by Pavlodar police on November 11, 2024, involves damages estimated at nearly 400 million rubles, equivalent to approximately 2.57 billion tenge. The charges relate to theft committed by an organized group on an especially large scale.
The audacious crime occurred in the autumn of 2024 when perpetrators broke through a wall of the bank branch, located on the ground floor of a residential building. They made off with over a billion tenge worth of valuables. Initial reports led to the detention of five suspects, all identified as Russian nationals.
By February 2025, a Kazakh court had sanctioned their arrest, and a joint investigative task force was established. In May 2025, the case was transferred to Russian investigative authorities through international legal channels due to the suspects' citizenship. The victims are around 40 Kazakh citizens, primarily residents of the Pavlodar region.
The investigation has since taken on an international dimension. In January 2026, Bolat Nurseitov, First Deputy Head of the Pavlodar Regional Police Department, reported that Kazakh officers had recently returned from official trips to Georgia and Armenia. The trips were conducted based on information about accomplices in those countries.
"Comprehensive legal assistance was provided by these states," Nurseitov stated during a briefing. "The necessary scope of investigative and operational measures has been carried out. These materials will subsequently be sent to the Prosecutor General's Office and investigative bodies of the Russian Federation."
While Nurseitov acknowledged it was difficult to specify the exact stage of the complex investigation, he expressed confidence: "The process is underway. I think we will get results soon." Many victims have reportedly chosen not to publicly disclose the full extent of their financial losses.
