The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has issued a formal statement condemning an attack by Iranian drones on its territory. The incident, which occurred on March 5, targeted the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
According to the statement, drones launched from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran struck two locations. One drone hit the terminal building of an airport in the city of Nakhchivan, causing damage to the structure. A second drone fell near a school building in the village of Shakerabad.
The Azerbaijani foreign ministry reported that two civilians were injured as a result of these strikes. The government in Baku has strongly condemned the attacks, labeling them a violation of international law and an action that heightens regional tensions.
In response to the incident, Azerbaijan has demanded that Iran provide a clear explanation for what happened without delay. Baku insists Tehran must conduct a thorough investigation and take urgent measures to prevent similar attacks from occurring in the future.
The Azerbaijani statement concluded with a warning, explicitly stating that "the Azerbaijani side reserves the right to take appropriate retaliatory measures." To underscore its position, Azerbaijan summoned Iran's ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Baku, Mojtaba Demirchioglu. A decisive protest was conveyed and a corresponding diplomatic note was handed over.
