Azerbaijan Thwarts Iranian-Backed Terror Plot Targeting Pipeline and Synagogue
@TengriNews
The State Security Service (SSS) of Azerbaijan has announced the prevention of a major terrorist operation, which it states was planned by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The plot targeted critical infrastructure and religious sites within Azerbaijan.
According to the SSS, the comprehensive counterintelligence operation was aimed at ensuring the safety of citizens and strategic national assets. The alleged targets included the strategically vital Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan oil pipeline, the Israeli embassy in Baku, a leader of the Mountain Jewish community, and an Ashkenazi synagogue.
Authorities reported that three explosive devices had been smuggled into Azerbaijani territory. The security services successfully intercepted the transfer of these devices to other individuals, thereby averting potential casualties and destruction.
As a result of the investigation and subsequent trial, several Azerbaijani citizens have been convicted. Four individuals were found guilty and sentenced to six years and six months in prison. Two others are accused of plotting an assassination attempt on a public figure, while another faces charges for illegal possession of weapons and explosives. These three suspects remain under arrest pending further legal proceedings.
